Are PVC windows resistant to bad weather?

One of the outstanding features of the PVC windows NOVES okná a.s. is the resistance. Our products are resistant to natural influences – mites don‘t attack PVC windows and they don’t corrode like standard wooden or metal windows. Ventilation flaps automatically respond to changing external conditions (flap is open when there is the low-pressure difference between exterior and interior, it closes automatically when this difference is increased and it regulates the air flow between exterior and interior).

Isn’t aluminum outdated and unfavorable material?

Aluminum products are characterized by high dimensional stability, unusual high resistance to weather conditions and their unavoidable feature is also the resistance to fire. Our products, using aluminum, don’t require excessive maintenance and their persistence is practically unlimited. For these features, aluminum is considered ageless and eternally modern construction material.

How do I clean PVC window frames?

Noves okná a.s. recommends the range of resources for the treatment of frames, strips and fittings, specially developed for the issue of PVC and aluminum windows called TREATMENT SETS WES, which you can buy in our company. Obviously, the customer might use standard detergents without solvents or abrasive particles for the cleaning of frames, such as cleansing milk or Pril. To remove tough dirt from construction, we can use Fenosol for plastic product, Gefopur UW 10 or Gefopur 5 for aluminum product. Apply the detergent with a linen cloth on the surface, rub it on, let dry and wipe with a dry cloth.

What are thermal bridges?

Thermal bridge can be characterized as a part of the building construction, where the inner surface temperature changes significantly. It is caused by variation of the thickness of the building structure and also by different size of the inner area receiving heat and outer area transmiting heat (e.g. corners of walls, floors etc.)

Wooden or plastic?

When replacing windows, you certainly ask the question whether it is better to choose plastic or wooden ones. The first advantage of PVC windows is that they don’t need paint. On the other hand, low-quality white PVC windows might eventually become grey or yellow. Another argument against PVC windows is that they have too strong profiles. But it all depends on designed windows. Manufacturers are now able to produce windows with the same profiles thickness as the original ones.

Wooden windows are durable and they have good thermal insulation features. Softline profiles don’t show any dimensions instability as timber doesn’t heat up even on sunny days.  The disadvantage of euro windows is that they should be regularly refurbished.

PVC windows
PVC windows have less elegant design than wooden ones, but they are still very popular among customers. The reason is their low price and low demand for their maintenance. They only require a simple cleaning. Their frames are resistant to corrosion and mildew. Now you can buy PVC windows in the colour of timber.

Window condensation

Window condensation

Window condensation is a surface condensation of water vapours, by which indoor air in a room is saturated on cold interior surfaces. Condensation of water vapour on a scuntion and glass may result in very unpleasant hygienic problems. Modern windows are too close and they don’t provide a desired exchange of indoor air by natural infiltration. Due to the lack of air exchange, interior environment is too humid. Window is a structure which does not absorb water – increased humidity causes condensation on it. The paradox is that in most cases, condensation shows the quality of the window (i.e. the window seals well). On the contrary, some manufacturers supply poor quality windows which don’t condense. They don’t seal and it results in continuous ventilation of rooms.

ESCAPE OF HUMIDITY

Air can at certain temperature absorb only some limited amount of water –warm air more, cold air less. Air above this level isn’t able to absorb more water, which causes that this water precipitate in the coldest areas. We see this every morning in our bathrooms when we take shower – cold tiles cool down the hot air from the shower and it is no longer able to keep excess water vapour. The tiles condense and we see water drops running down.

In winter season, outdoor air is relatively more saturated with water vapour, but because of its lower temperature, it contains much smaller absolute amount of water vapour than warm room air, which tends to have lower saturation (there is a subjective opinion of windows users, which is incorrect that intensive ventilation lets humid outdoor air into the room and warm dry air out – in fact, intensive ventilation reduces indoor humidity!). The lower the air exchange in the room the higher the relative humidity of indoor air, especially in winter season! The smaller the room is the higher the relative humidity of air, which explains more frequent incidence of hygienic problems (mold) in smaller flats in comparison to bigger flats. The hygienic problem upraises rather in a smaller children’s room than in a larger living room. There usually sleep two people in the bedroom, who breathe out more water vapours than one person, for example in the student’s room. In the edge areas of glazing then, due to higher thermal conductivity of the distance profile, increase of heat flux and decrease of indoor surface temperature occurs in comparison to the other glazing area. When this temperature declines below the dew point temperature, there is condensation of water vapour. One of the reasons of these problems might be the high value of the coefficient of heat passage of insulating double glazing Ug> 1.8 W / (m2.K) [our company NOVES normally uses glasses with Ug = 1.1 W/(m2.K)].

Cooling of interior scuntion surfaces and window frames can be avoided by insulating of exterior scuntion with at least 30 mm of thermal insulation after new windows are installed and by vapour-tight insulating of interior joint between the window and scuntion with special tapes or foils. If a whole peripheral wall of an older house has a very low thermal-insulating power (fully burnt brick, cinder blocks, etc.), it is necessary to think about the insulation of the whole facade. Otherwise, water vapour would precipitate on cold scuntions, humidity would soak into walls and the damp wall becomes an ideal place for mold. Mounting of interior blinds also contribute to condensation, which restrict air flow along the glass. The use of interior blinds, an incorrect placement of curtains and an intermittent way of heating may stress this disorder, as well as impervious laminate flooring and wall coating with paints enhanced with latex. Often we see that there are evaporators on the heaters under the windows, flowers on the internal parapets or rooms adjusted by wet processes (coating, repairs, etc.).

From our daily experience, we can conclude that explaining and cause identifying of excessive window condensation with customers is a very delicate issue. It is believed that ventilation uselessly lets air out while the price for thermal energy is constantly increasing. The truth is that opening of the ventilating aperture, i.e. opening of the window sash into the folded position is the worst way of ventilation in winter season. Air exchange is slow and the window must be open for quite a long time. Heat from the room escapes much longer than by intensive ventilation, the walls of the room cool down and fresh air in the room heats only slowly. Much more effective and economical is intensive ventilation by opening of window sash wide for 5-10 minutes. It needs to be done several times a day, especially before bedtime. Fresh drier air enters the room within a few minutes (5-10), it is heated quickly from the walls which are accumulated with heat and they haven’t cooled down, because ventilation lasted only a short time. Usually, fresh air is heated after 5-10minutes after closing the window. The flat user thus gains air rich in oxygen and makes the first and most important step to eliminate window condensation. In the majority of cases, when users of high-quality windows had pointed to ‘poor quality’ of the windows due to excessive condensation, the mode of ventilation had been changed (perfect ventilation before the bedtime) and the problem disappeared. The appropriate solution for the required air exchange can be achieved through special ventilation systems (flaps, ventilators, grilles). The solution is often offered also by the window fittings manufacturer. One of the options of the whole perimeter variable system of window fitting type Winkhaus autoPILOT for open – folding windows is an additional equipment of this fitting, known under several established names, e.g. ventilation, micro-ventilation, slit ventilation or so-called the fourth position of the handle. This type of fitting is a normal part on all open – folding windows in the company NOVES, unless required differently. Higher possibility of ventilation compared to ultimate folded position, by price and function, is multi-position ventilation. Fitting components for this type of ventilation are always placed depending on the size of the window and options, either on the vertical part of the window sash on the rail or on the upper horizontal part of the sash fitting. Air flaps are inbuilt either above the windows into the expansion profile or as a separate unit to the frame, to the frame, into the insulating glass or between the frame and the sash. Ventilation systems, as a separate unit to the frame or in the expansion profiles, have a spatial advantage and thus pollen filters can go in them. Their disadvantage is their size and visibility which worsens the aesthetic side of the window, causes higher demandingness and it is impossible to mount them or remove them additionally. If such ventilation systems do not allow access to their entrails, it is impossible to clean air intake paths and the dirt and bacteria might subside. The same is true for ventilation systems in the insulating glass. Ventilation systems between the frame and the sash are smaller in size, so it hasn’t been possible to mount there pollen filters yet. Their advantage is that they can be mounted additionally or removed anytime. They work on a mechanical principle and so they have nothing to go wrong in them. They are able to ventilate from 5 to 9m3/hour/window area and the paths can be cleaned very easily. Since the systems are integrated between the frame and the sash, they can be cleaned anytime when the window is open. The fact that these systems are integrated in the window, they don’t affect their appearance and don’t interfere – indirectly supporting elegance of the selected windows. For systems with stop or central sealing, there exists system aluplast Regel Air ®, which is mounted into the upper part between the frame and the sash, it doesn’t worsen the thermal insulating features of the windows and it is suitable for acoustic insulating the class IV to 42 dB. New among these systems is aluplast BasicAir plus ®, which is also mounted into the upper part of the windows between the frame and the sash but it is only used for the systems with central sealing. It doesn’t worsen the thermal insulating features of windows, it works from the pressure difference 4Pa achieving acoustic insulating parameters of the class IV to 42 dB and since no manipulation with the window structure is needed, it retains its high security, supports its elegance and it has integrated protection against ingress of insect into the interior. Ventilation systems help prevent the occurrence of mold. Investment in them is 10 – 20 times lower than the potential costs associated with the redevelopment of the premises and the risk to health of its inhabitants. Ventilation should never be underestimated, because by its omission we can cause permanent damage.

Reducing heat losses and energy consumption is a purpose of each customer when purchasing new window. In its selection, an important role plays technical parameters of the window (heat transfer coefficient) and an overall appearance. The installation of the window and a detail of the connection to walling tend to be much less important.

Non-professional installation can reduce good technical parameters of high-quality window and it happens quite regularly that thermal and acoustic insulation features of the window aren’t the same at the assembly as features of the window facing. By purchasing of the window, the customer actually gets quality window facing seal. The customer wants to get back the investment in insulation glass with rare gases and five or six chamber profiles by saving the cost of heating or cooling.

The quality of window is significantly influenced by the solution in contact with the walling. The detail of the window embedding in the opening must transmit the load of the window into outer walling by anchors, balance motions of various construction materials and compensate asperities of the construction opening. Heat escapes through the improperly made connection joint of the window, return of the investment is prolonged and user window features are worsened (condensation, mold making, blowing under window board).
Connection joint of the window to the outer walling should achieve:

  • at least the same heat transfer coefficient as the window
  • at least the same air soundproofing as the window
  • zero permeability on the interior side of the window
  • elimination of water vapour condensation, which prevents mold
  • weather resistance
  • dilatation ability to various construction materials

Classic window installation using polyurethane foam as thermal and acoustic insulation and additional coating applying no longer meets the current requirements for the connecting joint. The excess foam must be cut off after hardening. Consequently, the structure of the foam is opened and it starts sucking humidity. When humidity is saturated up to 5% of the foam volume, thermal insulating capability of the foam decreases by 50%. This results in a shift of isotherm 13 °C (temperature of mold creation) to the interior. In winter season and when ventilation is inadequate, this causes mold creation. Another problem is that the polyurethane foam after application to connection joint isn’t protected from UV radiation and it leads to its rapid degradation. Hidden problem arises by prolonged exposure of the frame dilatation, when polyurethane foam isn’t able to compensate frame motions and it tears from the bedding. Thus damaged foam no longer meets the basic technical requirements of connecting joints. The three-part system of window strips can meet these requirements in a long term. Particular components of this system perform different functions. The outer permeable seal protects from weather exposures and it also ventilates connecting joint to prevent condensation of water vapour and mold creation. The central sealing serves as thermal and acoustic insulation. Internal paro-impermeable sealing separates the inner climate from the outside one and it also protects the central sealing from humidity from the interior. This system provides the required parameters of the connecting joint according to the motto ‘tighter inside than outside’. The customer has an option of choosing the window from various suppliers who are able to mount it according to new requirements to the connecting joint. The question of the customer about the assembly should be one of the fundamental to be asked. Nonuse of complex materials at assembly (three-part system of window strips) could cause many problems in the future. After all, the window isn’t bought for one season…

Instructions how to maintain and care for your PVC windows and doors:

Complete sets for active care, maintenance and preservation of your windows and doors. WES Clean 115ml – surface protection for white, color PVC and aluminum surfaces.
This product is suitable for cleaning and maintenance of the window and door surfaces made from hard PVC. It separates the profile from its environment by creating an antistatic layer with the UV protection.

WES Silica 25ml – gasket preservative.
Designated to provide care and maintenance of the window and door gaskets. It creates a highly elastic film of elastomer such as APKT and EPDM. When treated with this product, the gasket remains flexible and repeals humidity. The treatment prevents the gasket from sticking to the profile in the summer and from freezing to it in winter.

WES Oilo 25ml – lubricant for hinges and ironmongery.
Special product designated to maintain and provide care for window and door inronmongery and its mechanical parts. It ensures easy movements, reduces wear-and-tear and protects against corrosion.

Removal of protective foils, removal of raw impurities after parging

Products are accomodated with inside and outside protective foil. These foils protect products from damage during production, transportation, manipulation, mounting / building in, but not during construction works (e.g. during parging of door case). Obligation of riggers is to remove these foils after building the product into construction hole, as they do not serve for protection from damage during masonry. Constructor recommends to the purchaser to cover whole windows with foils before parging. By PVC, but mainly by aluminium products, i tis necessary to pay special attention when in contact with lime and cement, therefore we recommend to protect surface of products during parging by safety tape. If not done so, we recommend to remove raw impurities with wetted paint-brush immediately after parging.
In case of postponed mounting i tis necessary to store windows into dark rooms without sunny spot, as UV sun rays cause fast aging of protective foil, which causes difficult removal of the foil. Therefore i tis recommended to remove protective foil within two months from delivery of products.

Cleaning and care of windows

Please do not clean just glas of your windows, but frame and inside areas in space of frame and sash, as well – so you raise value in use of window. New windows are characterized by their easy maintenance, however they are neither maintenance-free, nor self-cleaning. PVC windows do not require often maintenance and are easy to care, but care intervals need to be adjusted according to level of pollution! Please consider more often care intervals if you live close to pollution sources (roads, railways, factories, etc.). We would like to ask you, to pay your attention to one new information regarding agressive effect of combination of sun and pollen of trees (birch tree) and grass during time of their occurance. If there is no adequate cleaning done, then the pollution can cause irremovable appearance and functional damage of window. This can have impact on warranty conditions in warranty card.

For celaning purposes please use common detergents without organic diluents and harsch particles (regular cleaning by neutral celaning products prevents further pollution and ensures long lasting lifetime of window / door).

Majority of organic acids (such as acetic, malic, citric, lactacid, vine and concentrated) do not have an impact on aluminium windows, they are resistant also against concentrated nitric acid. However, a negative impact have salt acid, sulphur acid, strong lyes, ammonia ash, in warm condition but with lower impact acetic acid and citric acid. Therefore we do not recommend to do experiments with celaning products based on acids and lyes.

PVC material of window profiles inclines to electrostatic charge. Polishing just highlightes this attribute even more. It is possible to prevent creation of electrostatic charge by antistatic celaning product (e.g. Pronto spray against dust, suitable for furniture, PVC, glass, TV and Hifi, other celaning products for PVC components of PCs. Such a celaning product ensures elimination of high electrostatic charge on PVC profiles and by this it reduces leaning to repeating pollution (sedimentation of dust on windows).

Maintenance of seals

Seals of modern materials are subject to all materials, natural aging. In order to seal your windows and doors remain water-resistant against water and drafts a longer time, thus remaining flexible and functional, lubricate them once or several times a year with silicone oil, deer tallow or talc. Are commonly available in stores. Sealing profiles made of PVC or rubber should not come into contact with concentrated cleaner. We recommend you, as the most appropriate formulation, WES Silica of WES cleaning kit.

Drainage and decompression

At each window frame embedded in the building envelope are on the outside of the window frame placed drainage / drainage holes penetrated the leakage of rainwater - always keep them free and clear. Drainage sashs you will find after opening on the bottom edge of the sash. Stopper seal on top of the frame is operable windows to decompression interrupted. Such suspensions seals to supply products in accordance with processing procedures for the production of plastic windows / doors and does not affect the deterioration of the declared properties of the product.

Maintenance of forging

Your windows are equipped with technically high-grade forging. All hardware parts are consumable parts and are capable of functioning correctly when it is exercised their regular maintenance. Moving parts (see Fig. below) it is necessary to lubricate so easily moved, it is necessary to tighten the screw the handles. Such maintenance should be performed at least twice a year, use the product Oilo of WES cleaning kit.

Ventilation

In the past, windows were made so unsealed that there was a natural air exchange and thus to reduce the humidity in the room. With old windows / doors the air exchanged through leaks and gaps in the windows, incomplete or improper insulation between the second frame of the old windows and outer walls of the so-called connecting joint. In order to reduce heating costs, eliminate drafts and eliminate external noise, were constructed new windows / doors that meet these requirements. Newly manufactured products, building components, windows / doors meet the current EU legislative requirements so called basic requirements for buildings.
